Welcome

Welcome to howtoos.nl

Since the start of howtoos.nl in february 2009 this site has been changed several times.

From the need to be independent I started to publish my OSX-howtoos (for the acer aspire 5051) on this website.
First an old-school html website.

Once started with "html" my interrest grew for cms's (content management system).
Among many cms's, Drupal seemed to have the best cards. So howtoos.nl became a Drupal-site.
This is where my interest for web-technology became a fact. I was amazed about all the functionality's.
And gradually howtoos.nl became filled up with more "web-related" articles.

Installing an operating-system on a pc is, once finished, not that exiting.
The world of websites is more dynamic....the focus is on improvement...not limited by hardware specifications (at least, not local).

And still.....all the development of this website is done on the same "old" acer aspire, with osx-leopard and some linux.

TiddlyTools

Once you are used to tiddlywiki...sooner or later you come across the tiddlytools site.

TiddlyWiki

In my quest for open source solutions ....old hardware optimizations ....free stuff .....I stumbled upon TiddlyWiki....and fell in love with it!

What is it:

TiddlyWiki is a single html file which has all the characteristics of a wiki - including all of the content, the functionality (including editing, saving, tagging and searching) and the style sheet. Because it's a single file, it's very portable - you can email it, put it on a web server or share it via a USB stick.

But it's not just a wiki!

Hack the footer in the turnkey-linux appliances

The useful turnkey appliances will look more "PRO" without the "powered by turnkey linux" footer.

I have developed a method to remove and/or change the "powered by turnkey linux" footer for the following appliances:

  • Drupal 5 (2009.03)

  • Drupal 6 (2009.03)

  • Joomla15 (2009.07.1)

  • Wordpress 2.5.1-11 (2009.03)

  • Mediawiki (2009.04)

  • phpBB (2009.03)

Acer Aspire Ubuntu

Installing Ubuntu-linux is fairly simple.

In this howto the Acer Aspire is used as an example....so some specific issues will be mentioned about this.

First you need to decide what desktop environment you would like to use:

(all 3 lead to a working linux.....it's just a matter of taste)

Go to the site containing the ubuntu you like and choose to download the latest version (9.04 at the moment this article is written) .....for all 3 types...KDE, Gnome, Xfce.

Retail installation

General overview retail install's

Before I'm diving in the retail install on the acer aspire I'm gonna explain how this works in general.

I advice you to experiment and install with the normal hacked versions before starting this method.....in fact a working osx will be necessary. If you have an other pc with osx.....or a real apple then your fine too.

For using the original apple install dvd u need to load some kext  (and a hacked kernel for platforms that don't support apple's vanilla kernel....like the acer) in the RAM before booting the dvd.
Without these kext you cannot boot the dvd (and the installation) at all.
Lets see it as loading a virtual apple bios...so the dvd finds genuine apple hardware.
